Introduced in Generation IX, Toedscruel is a fascinating addition to the competitive landscape. While it bears a striking physical resemblance to the classic Water-type Tentacruel, this convergent species is a Ground and Grass-type Pokémon. Standing at 1.9 meters tall and weighing 58.0 kilograms, Toedscruel brings a completely different set of resistances, weaknesses, and tactical options to the battlefield.
Analyzing the Ground and Grass Typing
The combination of Ground and Grass typing gives Toedscruel a unique defensive and offensive profile. Defensively, it gains a crucial immunity to Electric-type attacks, alongside resistances to Ground and Rock-type moves. However, this dual typing also introduces several vulnerabilities. Trainers must be highly cautious of Ice-type attacks, which deal quadruple damage, as well as common weaknesses to Fire, Flying, and Bug-type moves.
Looking at its base stats, Toedscruel possesses an impressive Special Defense of 120 and a solid Speed stat of 100. This allows it to outspeed many mid-tier defensive threats and survive powerful special attacks. On the flip side, its physical bulk is lacking, with an HP stat of 80 and a physical Defense of only 65. Its offensive stats are modest, with both Attack at 70 and Special Attack at 80, indicating that its primary value lies in utility rather than raw damage.
Mycelium Might and Utility Roles
What truly defines Toedscruel in competitive play is its signature ability, Mycelium Might. This ability causes its status moves to always act last within their priority bracket, but in exchange, these moves bypass the target's abilities. This creates a unique dynamic where Toedscruel can land powerful status moves like Spore on targets that would normally be immune, such as Gholdengo with its Good as Gold ability or Garganacl with Purifying Salt.
Because of this ability, Toedscruel excels as a hazard setter and disruptor. It can reliably put opponents to sleep, clear entry hazards with Rapid Spin, or set up its own hazards like Spikes and Toxic Spikes. Its base 100 Speed is particularly useful for utilizing Rapid Spin, allowing it to boost its own Speed and outpace even more threats as the match progresses.
Team Synergy and Counters
To maximize the effectiveness of Toedscruel, trainers should pair it with teammates that can cover its physical fragility. Physically defensive walls like Corviknight make excellent partners, as they can pivot into physical attackers and resist Ice and Bug-type moves. In return, Toedscruel can absorb Electric-type attacks aimed at its flying allies. Trainers must remain vigilant against fast physical sweepers that can exploit its low physical defense before it can execute its utility moves.
