The hunder archetype is a classic family of Level 4 LIGHT Thunder monsters that debuted in the Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL era. Unlike most modern archetypes that rely heavily on Special Summoning to flood the board, the hunder family specializes in chaining multiple Normal Summons in a single turn. This unique engine identity allows players to swarm the field with Level 4 monsters while bypassing certain anti-Special Summon floodgates, making it a fascinating option for Rank 4 Xyz strategies.
Key Starters and Extenders
The core of the engine revolves around Pahunder and Mahunder. Both monsters possess similar effects: once per turn, you can Normal Summon one Level 4 LIGHT Thunder monster from your hand in addition to your Normal Summon or Set. By summoning Pahunder and using its effect to summon Mahunder, you can then use Mahunder to summon a third Thunder monster, rapidly building a board. Brohunder acts as the primary searcher, adding any Level 4 LIGHT Thunder monster from your Deck to your hand when it is Normal Summoned.
To maintain card advantage, the deck utilizes Sishunder and Thunder Sea Horse. When Sishunder is Normal Summoned, she can target a Level 4 LIGHT Thunder monster in your Graveyard and banish it, then add a different one from your Graveyard to your hand during the End Phase. Thunder Sea Horse is a powerful searcher that can discard itself to add two copies of the same Level 4 LIGHT Thunder monster from your Deck to your hand. However, using Thunder Sea Horse prevents you from Special Summoning during that turn, meaning it is best used to set up your hand for the following turn.
Constructing the End Board
Because the hunder monsters excel at putting Level 4 monsters on the field, your Extra Deck will consist almost entirely of Rank 4 Xyz monsters. For offensive plays, Starliege Paladynamo is an excellent choice, as it requires two LIGHT monsters and can reduce an opponent's monster's ATK to 0 while negating its effects. Constellar Omega provides excellent protection, making your LIGHT monsters unaffected by Spell and Trap effects for the turn.
For defensive setups, generic Rank 4 monsters are your best option. Number 41: Bagooska the Terribly Tired Tapir can stall the opponent by forcing monsters into Defense Position and negating their activated effects. Abyss Dweller is another crucial tool to shut down Graveyard-reliant strategies. To recover resources, Recycling Batteries is a fantastic Spell card that lets you add two Thunder monsters with 1500 or less ATK from your Graveyard back to your hand, allowing you to repeat your swarming plays on subsequent turns.
When is the Deck Worth Playing?
The hunder archetype is best suited for casual play, local tournaments, or retro formats. It is highly practical for beginner-to-intermediate players who want to learn the fundamentals of Rank 4 toolboxing without memorizing complex, multi-step combo lines. While it lacks the raw power and negation boards of modern meta decks, its ability to play under Special Summon restrictions and its simple, recursive resource loop make it a fun and rewarding deck to pilot.
